What Is MenNation? I Tried the Hookup Site

MenNation is a gay hookup site launched in 1996 by FriendFinder Networks, the same company behind AdultFriendFinder and FriendFinder-X.

My Personal Experience Testing MenNation

I’ve been coaching LGBTQ+ singles for almost 10 years now, and I’ve heard the same pain points over and over again. First, you have to find somebody who’s gay, and then you have to see if they’re single, and finally you hope they’re into the same things as you. That’s a lot that has to line up.

MenNation brings together men seeking men for hookups to make the search for gay dates more straightforward.

Profile Setup Process

Making an account is quite simple. Go to your web browser on your phone or computer and type in “MenNation.com.” You’ll be greeted by a homepage with a montage of hot men and a signup dropdown asking if you’re a single man or a gay couple.

I signed up using my phone and was browsing in about 7 minutes.

It started with a required email, username, and password. Then I saw the typical questions about sexual orientation, body type, race, and marital status. 

I stumbled a bit trying to define my relationship status. The dropdown options did not include “engaged,” “in a relationship,” or “open relationship.” Instead a simple “attached” was used to describe all of the above. 

The coach in me wanted to specify “securely attached.” 

I was required to introduce myself with a headline of no more than 10 characters. 

Next, the open-ended “Tell others about yourself” bio is entirely optional (although I highly recommend it). Adding a photo was also optional, but the site reminded me that profiles with photos get more attention and interactions.

What I appreciated most was the quick and simple age verification system on MenNation. I simply opened my camera, lined my face up to the outline, snapped a photo, and the age estimation system approved me in an instant.

If you don’t feel comfortable with that process, MenNation also accepts age verification by scanning an ID such as a driver’s license.

User Interface

The navigation felt a bit outdated and not very mobile-friendly to me. The mobile version was crowded with an extensive list of menu items. It wasn’t very intuitive to me as a newcomer. 

On a desktop, however, I had an easier time navigating the menu on a larger screen. The site has four main categories to explore:

• Search: Browsing other users.
• Who’s Hot: Viewing popular profiles, photos, and videos.
• Live Action: For exhibitionists to show off on webcam.
• Community: To engage with groups in public posts.

The messaging system is pretty straightforward and allowed me to text, share emojis, photos, and even jump on a video call once I was a Gold Member. 

All members can share nude or semi-nude photos and videos for public enjoyment. Any member can leave comments on this media for free.

The grid of showing profiles that are “Online Now” or “Near Me” is an obvious perk for guys looking to hook up right away. Filters by kink and appearance are available for free as well. I like to sort by “Last Visit” to prioritize those users who are more active. There’s also the option to sort by distance or popularity.

You know we’ve come a long way with technology when you can scroll through live video thumbnails of men pleasuring themselves for your entertainment. 

The Live Action section is one of the most unique features I’ve seen on a hookup site. Gold Members can publish a livestreaming video and interact with people in the comments section. It’s pretty simple to get out there.

About 90% of the videos show naked men pleasuring themselves or someone else. MenNation had a pop-up warning about the explicit nature of the content before I viewed it.

Then there’s the Community Forum, where I can search through recent posts, blogs, and niche groups, all sex-related. It’s a space for exploring kinks and finding your people. The forum boasts having over 182,000 groups with a total of 1.2 million member posts.

I was also interested to see an offer to “Enable Your Virtual Avatar?” This new feature (currently being beta tested) uses AI to respond to incoming messages.

I would choose a tone: “Friendly and Inquisitive,” “Playful and Engaging,” “Warm and Welcoming,” or “Direct and Efficient,” and let it know how open it should be to “adult themes.” This is a fascinating proposition that probably would save time, but I prefer to speak for myself on dating sites.

What Happened When I Actively Used It for 2 Weeks

After using the site for two weeks, I received messages from four users, three of whom had no pictures on their profiles. Two were in my local area, and two were in another state. 

I added four friends, all of whom were quite handsome from their photos and seemed to be real profiles. 

My profile got quite a bit of attention from users who interacted with a fire emoji or a wink. While I’m not currently on the hunt for hookups, I imagine I could’ve met some handsome men for a good time, especially with a bit more effort.

The biggest downside is the limited number of active local users on the site. You’d probably be better off using Grindr or Sniffies for in-person interactions unless you live in a bigger metropolitan area. 

If exploring an online, sex-positive community is of interest to you, then upgrading to the Gold Plan will definitely be worth your while so you can explore the many options available to connect with others.

Is MenNation Legit? Online Security Need-to-Knows

If by legit, we’re talking data security, real users, and billing transparency— I’d say mostly yes, MenNation is a legitimate place to meet people.

The safety features include two age verification methods that ensure all users are over 18.

The verification systems aren’t perfect, however, so vetting users will still largely fall on you. Look out for the warning signs of fake profiles, bots, and scam artists…which unfortunately are not unique to MenNation. 

LGBTQ+ seniors are a high-risk group when it comes to online scams and should take extra precautions. Don’t share personal information with strangers online–especially financial details. 

Profile blocking and the ability to report suspicious users are features that I see as essential for online safety and a good user experience. I used the reporting system when I saw a livestreamer using drugs, and it worked like a charm.

This site is great for those who are exploring their sexuality and kinks. Exhibitionists and voyeurs will be especially pleased with the live cam features, including an incentive for streamers to make money. 

If nudity, crossdressing, and kink make you uncomfortable, you’ll want to steer clear of the site or utilize its nudity filter. Although, to be warned, nudity is a good majority of the content.

You can build a profile, share livestreams, connect in chatrooms, and utilize the many features to communicate with other members.

Pros and Cons

Compared to similar sites, there are quite a few pros. The large user base means you’ll have no shortage of users to connect, admire, and chat with you. 

The community groups and message boards make it easy to find your people on the site. 

The users themselves are very sexually open and quite welcoming to all orientations, gender expressions, and kink curiosities. The Live Action scroll feed is quite unique and allows you to browse through thumbnails of live video streams.

The lack of verification also means you need to practice some extra vigilance regarding catfish.

My biggest critique is that MenNation doesn’t quite feel as streamlined as I’d like. The free user interface is really only meant for online lurking, while the paid version is geared toward actually arranging hookups. 

And the sheer number of tabs and communication features makes me feel like the site designers added every feature they could possibly think of, with no regard to how cluttered it would look.
