Meeting new people through online dating has become more common. Young people in particular rely on dating apps to find their next romance. “We met on [insert dating app name here]” has become the dominant love story all over the world.
It should come as no surprise, then, that each country has its favorite dating app. In this blog post, we’ll review the most downloaded dating apps by country. Before we jump in, always remember that the number of downloads merely shows the popularity of the app in a certain country. It’s not a guarantee of success.
That said, buckle up and let’s start our analysis with one of the biggest markets for online dating: the United States.
1. United States – Tinder
For better or worse, Tinder has long maintained the status of the most popular dating app in the United States.1 With its swipe matching feature, Tinder gamifies the process of finding a match, and it can be addictive for singles seeking fast and casual conversations.

Since it launched in 2012, the Tinder app has been downloaded over 630 million times, and the app arranges an estimated 1.5 million dates per week. Despite its reputation as a hookup app, single people continue to flock to the swiping scene, and Tinder’s popularity shows no sign of waning anytime soon.
2. Mexico – Tinder
In North America, Tinder reigns supreme. Tinder is the most popular dating app to date in Mexico,2 with Bumble following not far behind.
While Mexican and American cultures are certainly different in many ways, there’s a lot of crossover between the dating cultures and media of our two nations. Tinder’s overwhelming popularity in the United States no doubt spilled over into Mexico.
Tinder likely resonates in Mexico a bit more than Bumble given the still-real presence of chivalry in the dating culture.3 Mexico is by no means the most socially conservative nation we’re discussing, but Mexican dating prioritizes traditional gender roles that may not gel as well with Bumble, where women must message first.
3. Canada – Hinge
With an estimated 28 million users worldwide,4 Hinge has recently edged out Bumble as the most popular online dating app in Canada. Known for its sleek design and clever prompts, the app “designed to be deleted” is getting Canadians dates, and many find love on the platform.

Hinge strikes the right balance of fun, quick profiles with useful information. This fits Canadian dating culture well, which is known for being laid-back and getting to truly know each other before diving into a relationship.5
4. Costa Rica – Boo
Costa Rican singles are finding themselves gravitating toward a new platform in online dating: Boo.
Boo is really making waves in the online dating world, and it’s easy to see why. The app blends the entertaining aspects of social media with dating, creating an experience that feels genuinely enjoyable.

While you can date more actively on Boo, many users truly enjoy making friends, chatting within the various “universes” of their interests, and connecting with people based on personality tests and mutual compatibility.
This lines up well with Costa Rica’s famously laid-back culture, where singles may want to have fun, get to know each other, and let the relationship move organically.
5. Brazil – Tinder
With millions of active users in South America, Tinder has solidified its position as a popular online dating app in Brazil. Brazilians in their 20s and 30s, with their fun-loving spirit, see a ton of daily matches on the mobile app.
Moreover, there’s no stigma attached to using dating apps in Brazil,6 so people don’t feel shy about downloading the Tinder app. As for location, Rio de Janeiro boasts the most matches, while Sao Paulo has the most active users.
6. Russia – VK Dating
VK Dating stands out as a leading dating app in Russia for connecting with potential partners. According to VK Dating, it has been downloaded 36 million times, with most users located in Russia.
While VK Dating works similarly to other swipe-based dating apps, the app prioritizes privacy, allowing users to hide their profiles from friends or change their status to offline while still swiping. This works well for Russian culture, which tends to be private about dating and relationships.

VK Dating caters to Russian and Eastern European singles.
It’s also worth noting that some popular Western dating apps — such as Tinder — are unavailable in Russia,7 making the Russian dating app market pretty unique.
7. France – Badoo
Since it launched in 2006, Badoo has emerged as one of the most popular dating sites in several European countries, including France. A survey of French singles even mentions that 40% of respondents have used Badoo in the past 12 months,8 leaving Tinder to become a runner-up for popularity in dating apps.

Badoo’s popularity is well-deserved, as the app engages users with a plethora of exciting features. However, some rankings have Hinge coming in as the top app in France in 2025, so Badoo had better watch its back.
8. United Kingdom – Hinge
Hinge isn’t only popular in North America or among English speakers; it’s also a hit in the United Kingdom, leading the charts there as well.
Similar to Canada, British dating culture is rather indirect and fairly modern. As a relationship-oriented, but still casual dating app, Hinge likely appeals to British sensibilities. British culture isn’t as sexually open as other Northern European countries, but it isn’t too traditional, either.
9. Italy – Tinder
No big surprise here: When it comes to online dating in Italy, Tinder is the gold standard. The app’s excellent language integration makes it fluid to use for Italian-speakers, and its location settings make it easy to use for those traveling around Europe.
Much like Mexico, Italian culture is largely modern, but with chivalry and signs of masculinity popular early in the dating process. Italian men are famously forward, so an app like Tinder, where forward gestures are more normalized, may feel like a better fit.
10. China – Momo
Momo is the leading Chinese dating app.9 Once a competitor with Tantan — the “Chinese Tinder” — Momo’s parent company acquired Tantan in 2018.

Momo is not just a dating app — it includes social media, broadcasting, video chat, games, and more. While some users find that these features have flooded the app with users who aren’t looking for relationships, they also help Momo fit better into Chinese social culture, where much connection happens online.
11. South Korea – Amanda
With a user base exceeding 5 million users, Amanda reigns as the most popular dating app in Korea. What sets Amanda apart is its scoring system. If you want to join this app, you must pass a screen test by getting a score of 3.0 or higher from 20 random existing members.

But don’t worry, if you fail the screen test, you can always try again — perhaps upping your odds by choosing a more attractive picture.
12. Taiwan – Tinder
Tinder has taken over as the top dating app in Taiwan. While the app’s reputation for casual dating doesn’t necessarily seem to gel with Taiwan’s more serious, relationship-oriented dating culture, Taiwan has a great deal of cultural exchange with other countries, including the United States.
Tinder allows singles to meet people in different locations, or who may be travelling for work and school, which works well with Taiwan’s goal-oriented culture.
13. Japan – Pairs
Though it’s neck-and-neck with Tinder, Pairs is the top app in Japan. The Japan-based app is focused on matching singles based on shared values, as opposed to just mutual attraction.

According to Japan Dev,10 Pairs shines in its focus on long-term relationships, which fits better into Japan’s more serious-oriented dating culture. While the app can get pricey, it’s worth it for finding a person who truly gets you and your culture.
14. Indonesia – Tinder
Indonesia is a bit of an outlier in Asia. Unlike some of the other large Asian countries, which tend to have their own popular dating apps, either unavailable, or unpopular within the Global West, Indonesian singles gravitate toward Tinder.
This might come as a bit of a surprise to readers who know a bit about Indonesia, where 87% of the population is Muslim.11 Tinder’s older reputation as a hookup app may seem to some incompatible with the Muslim faith, which tends to bend toward traditional dating practices.
But there are many ways to be Muslim, and different levels of religiosity.12 Additionally, many use Tinder to seek long-term relationships, not just to hook up.
15. Egypt – Tinder
Once again, Tinder comes in as the top dating app in Egypt. Egypt has a diverse cultural and ethnic population, making Tinder an app where everyone can find what they’re looking for in a partner.
And while Egyptian culture tends to be conservative and primarily facilitated with familial involvement,13 many people still date on their own or use dating apps and involve their families in the process. Tinder’s generality makes it possible to find someone with similar family values and move the relationship slowly once a connection is formed.
16. Morocco – iHappy
In Morocco, iHappy leads the dating app pack. The app has over 50 million downloads,14 and it offers singles a place to meet potential partners, chat, and make new friends.

The app promises to help singles find their soulmates, making it fit well into Morocco’s fairly conservative dating culture. iHappy is a tool for singles to find lasting love, and it is not intended as a hookup app. This works well for its Moroccan user base.
17. South Africa – Tinder
Though followed closely by Badoo, South Africa’s most popular dating app is, you guessed it, Tinder. South Africans primarily use Tinder to try to find love, and many women report feeling safer on Tinder than meeting partners in person.15
South Africa has a particularly high rate of gender-based violence.16 While the society, especially in urban areas, is fairly progressive, many women feel safer using dating platforms to meet potential partners.
18. Nigeria – InDating
According to SimilarWeb, the most popular app in Nigeria is InDating. InDating is popular as an Android app, making it compatible with the Nigerian market, where 88% of Nigerians use Androids.17

InDating allows users to both like profiles and mark their “admiration,” allowing singles to develop a variety of types of relationships, from friendships to serious romance. Nigerian dating blends traditionalism with modern technology,18 making an app like InDating — where singles can be as direct or forward as they like — a nice middle ground.
19. Australia – Hinge
If you’re looking for love in Australia, check out Hinge. Aussie’s love the app’s emphasis on personality, with plenty of prompts and photos to share their hobbies, travels, and interests.
It’s quite common for professional-class Australians to move or emigrate, making the option to change your location on Hinge a game-changer. Planning for an upcoming move from Sydney to Melbourne? Just change your location early!
What’s the Most Popular Dating App in the World?
Statista tells us that Tinder is hands down the most popular dating app globally,19 boasting over 6.1 million downloads in June 2024 alone.
And based on our by-country research, it’s no surprise. Tinder is the fan favorite in many countries, even those with dramatically different customs, languages, and dating cultures.
Still, most popular doesn’t always mean best, so depending on your dating goals and location, another app still may be a better fit.
Which Country Uses Online Dating Apps the Most?
Assume it was the US? Think again! China leads the world in dating app consumption, with a staggering 82.8 million Chinese people using dating apps in 2024.20 The US came in at second with 60.5 million users for the same year.
To be fair, that smaller number is still a much larger component of the US population, so we Americans may be more likely to be dating-app users after all.
Is Bumble More Popular Than Hinge in the U.S.?
Bumble and Hinge are in a constant battle for the #2 dating app in the US, but right now, Hinge is pulling ahead. According to SimilarWeb, Hinge is currently more popular than Bumble.
But keep in mind that might not stick. As of 2024, Bumble was beating out Hinge,21 so its winning streak might not stick.
Each Country Has Its Favorite Dating App – What’s Yours?
This list shows the success and prevalence of certain online dating brands. Meeting your partner through dating apps has become a global phenomenon.
From Egypt to South Africa, people can meet, expand their social circle, go on casual dates, and even find a long-term partner, all through the world’s most popular dating apps. It only takes a simple online signup process to get started.
Let’s be real, online dating isn’t an instant fix for finding love. You still need to put in the effort to have meaningful conversations and form a genuine connection with someone special. But if you’re ready to take a leap, online dating could be the beginning of your next romantic adventure.
