TransSingle Helps Members Find One-of-a-Kind Relationships

Navigating the world of online dating can be especially difficult for transgender singles. Many dating sites claim to cater to the LGBTQ community, but according to Riley McGrath of GLAAD, “For the most part, dating sites are more LGBQ friendly than trans friendly.”

McGrath looked at eight dating sites to find which ones catered most to the trans community. Many of them didn’t let non-binary individuals choose their gender identity, only allowing them to pick male or female options. Others only let users indicate an interest in either men or women and didn’t offer the option of choosing both.

Instead, McGrath suggested that trans-inclusive dating sites should have more options for gender identity and sexuality.

TransSingle entered the online dating market to give those trans singles a place to meet. Trans daters can feel free to be themselves on the platform, and cisgender singles can also join if they are open to relationships with trans people.

Studies show many cisgender singles are open to those types of relationships. Between 16% and 18% percent of respondents to a YouGovAmerica survey said they would be willing to date someone who identified as transgender.

On other dating sites, a trans person may have to select their gender and sexuality. Then they may feel the need to come out as trans every time they meet a potential match.

“It often seems like the second you tell someone in the dating world that you are trans, their entire view of you changes. Sometimes, if you don’t come out to someone, they can make you feel like you lied by not disclosing,” McGrath wrote in her article for GLAAD.

Some trans dating sites are also known for promoting hookups instead of helping singles build long-term relationships, but TransSingle has a different goal.

“Other sites have plenty of options for hookups, but on TransSingle, you will find someone who is in it for the long haul,” said Zartan, TransSingle Editorial Assistant.

TransSingle users are primarily looking for lasting relationships, not casual dates or one-night stands. Many are searching for someone with whom to spend the rest of their lives.

Zartan suggested that, while finding a committed partner online can be difficult for anyone, it is especially difficult for trans singles because of safety concerns and societal pressures.

TransSingle aims to ensure that those users can find the relationships they seek.

The first step is a signup process that serves to identify genuine users and weed out fake profiles, Zartan told us. The information singles provide during the signup process means that only serious users end up on the platform.

TransSingle also uses an algorithm to help match compatible partners. Singles receive a few matches each day to ensure they give those potential partners a chance, rather than just swiping through to the next person.

The site also offers advice about avoiding scams and staying safe online, especially for those who haven’t used dating platforms before.

“Unlike other trans dating sites, TransSingle understands the risks involved in dating online and does not try to behave like it’s immune to them,” Zartan said.

This promise of meeting only serious partners has attracted more than 20,000 American members. Some of the site’s users are trans, non-binary, or gender-noncomformng individuals, while others are cisgender people interested in dating trans partners. Most of TransSingle’s users are between 20 and 45 years old.

TransSingle has plenty of satisfied users, and many trans individuals have met their long-term partners through the site. And many online testimonials tout the platform’s effectiveness and ease of use.

Melissa from England wrote, “I am a trans woman and I got on this transgender site hoping to meet someone. I just didn’t imagine that I would find the man of my dreams so quickly and that he would accept me as I am. We are actually considering marriage.”

Another user, Jimmy from the United States, said, “I want to thank TransSingle for the opportunity I had to interact and find someone special. I found her and I’m very happy. It was with great surprise that I found myself talking to this beautiful trans girl who has a lot in common with me and seeks the same things, has the same goals, because, until then, I did not believe it was possible to find a serious relationship on a trans website.”

TransSingle has developed into a community, and supports finding love by sharing advice for trans people on its blog. Some recent topics include mistakes that trans women make while dating, and advice for trans women about embracing their femininity without comparing themselves to cis-women.

“Not every online dating site is good. Do your homework to be sure you are joining a site worth your time and emotions,” Zartan said. “If you are a transgender person, it is a wise move to join a site that has transgender people at its heart. Does it get any better than that?”
