Mounting “swipe fatigue” has pushed dating platforms to rethink how they keep users engaged. And Facebook Dating is among those betting that artificial intelligence is the fix.

Meta is developing an AI assistant for the platform that functions like a virtual wingman, helping users craft introductions and connect with matches whose goals align with their own.

It can also help users improve their dating profiles, which can make all the difference to users who struggle to express their personality on dating apps. Meta is also rolling out its “Meet Cute” feature, which it describes as yet another way of “helping people avoid swipe fatigue.”

The idea is that Meet Cute will give users a “surprise match” every week based on what the algorithm thinks they’re looking for in a relationship. Like the classic meet-cutes in movies, these unexpected connections are spontaneous and authentic, unlike the algorithm-controlled matches most dating platforms spit out.

Meta’s strategy is to give daters what they want — romantic meet cutes — while investing in the tried-and-true online dating model that provides freedom of choice and increased safety for the user.

Facebook Dating’s Tech Edge Makes It Small but Mighty

“Now, you’ll be able to find your best potential matches with a dating assistant, and get to the first date faster with Meet Cute,” Meta announced in a press release.

Perhaps surprisingly, given Facebook’s popularity with baby boomers, hundreds of thousands of users in their 20s create Facebook Dating profiles every month, according to Meta. In fact, the dating app has seen a 10% increase in matches year over year in the 18-29 age group.

Now, these users can apply the AI assistant for a more personalized experience on the app. “The assistant allows users to go beyond traditional traits like height or education, allowing you to enter unique prompts tailored to what you’re looking for,” Meta says on its website.

Facebook Dating’s modest popularity with young adults may pale in comparison to Tinder’s 75 million monthly active users, but it sends a message that some daters are willing to return to familiar stomping grounds (Facebook) rather than keep swiping on dating apps.

And regardless of how people feel about the advent of the AI age, many are still curious about how useful it can be on dating platforms. Meta’s use of AI holds particular weight, given the company’s deep ties to cutting-edge technology.

Meta introduced MetaAI in 2024, which was built using its own open source model, Llama (Large Language Model Meta AI), and Meta also made advancements in the VR (Virtual Reality) and AR (Augmented Reality) spaces with its Orion glasses.

Despite its technological advancements, Facebook Dating is a little late to both the AI and dating app parties.

AI Keeps Facebook Dating Relevant Amid Fierce Competition

The matchmaking app launched in 2019, well into the dating app craze of the 2010s. And three years later, Facebook Dating introduced its first AI-enhanced feature: An AI face scanning tool to help the app with age verification. As useful as this feature is, it didn’t directly benefit the consumer by making the app easier or more enjoyable to use.

Tinder first started experimenting with consumer-facing AI features in 2016, when it launched its AI-enhanced Smart Photos feature. Match Group’s partnership with OpenAI in 2024 was a sure sign that the dating industry and AI were on a collision course.

A giant company in the midst of financial uncertainty doesn’t bet on just anyone. The fact that Match Group willingly sank over $20 million into OpenAI speaks volumes about its faith in AI’s ability to generate engagement and boost profits going forward.

Facebook Dating may be late to the dating game, but Meta emphasizes its dedication to self-improvement. “We’ll continue to evolve Facebook Dating to help make meeting people easy, fun, and free,” according to Meta.

They’re not the only ones. As more dating platforms use AI to make matchmaking more accurate, to streamline the profile-creation process, and to help users craft interesting messages, the more consumers expect constant AI innovation.

At this rate, AI dating features are poised to become as ubiquitous as Facebook itself — though the jury’s out on whether Facebook Dating will see the same success.
