Adult Friend Finder Review: I Had a Wild Time

Pleasure-deprived adults who are looking for fun and games, rejoice! I just spent a few weeks on America’s oldest and largest sex-positive dating site.

For the uninitiated, Adult Friend Finder is a hookup site that has something like 105 million members. Founded in 1996, it’s been connecting adults for explicit encounters for nearly three decades.

Unlike dating sites built around the traditional movie trope, “meet cute, fall in love, get married,” AFF is explicitly about hookups, hedonism, kinks, and sexual adventure.

I was impressed by the explicit profile pictures. After visiting several “over 50” dating sites, this was a world of younger, fitter, and far more sexually free adults. 

I realized that the “friend” in their corporate name might just be your next sex partner. It’s understood by all. The site screams, “This is where the action is.”

The profile photos show toothsome nudes. This is not what you’d expect to see on most dating sites, where a lot of men look scruffy around the edges. This was a bit of a red flag: the profiles look real. But are they? And do the members here really get all the action they are (seemingly) encouraged to believe they will find? Here’s what I found.

First Impressions: It Was a Quick Signup

On the surface, AFF is exactly as advertised — and extremely lenient with newcomers. Compared to every other dating site I’ve visited over the past five years, AFF was much more relaxed and not really prying for personal details.

It did not start gathering my demographics, ask for financial information, nor require any real personal info except to establish that I was an adult. There weren’t even any sticky pop-ups — or pop-ups at all. It felt like a 1990s experience, before ads.

So right from the beginning, I liked what I saw. The platform wants to get you through the door without many questions asked, and they don’t oversell.

Here’s the information that was required:

• Gender (man, woman, couple, or trans)
• Orientation (a whole host of options including demisexual and pansexual)
• Looking For (love, casual, friends, or hanging out)
• Date of birth
• ZIP code

There was the option to write about myself in “Introduction Title,” “Tell Others About Yourself,” and “My Ideal Person.” And there were also kink tags for everything from bondage to shaving.

Browsing the Community for Free

I was able to explore much of the site with the top menu, which had four tabs: Search, Who’s Hot, Live Action, and Community.

I started on the “Community” page. This is home to all member-created content. It has categories for special sex interests.

Intriguingly, one of the biggest groups in Community was “Women Who Like Older Men – A celebration of everything in sex that is legal, fun, and has a touch of the age difference for good measure,” with 57,000 members. 

It got me wondering whether this was a sugar daddy kind of community or just girls who found older guys very sexy (I sure did in my youth)!

“What is AFF? It hosts communities for hot adults.”

There were also communities for “Nipples and Boobs,” “Erotic Hook-Up Stories,” “MILFs Looking for Younger Men,” and, really, you name it. Or as Internet Rule 34 dictates: “If it exists, there is porn of it.”

This site is all about diversity and equal opportunities for all adults. So expect to learn new things about sex and kinks!

Suffice to say, there are so many types of creative sex listed on this site. You’d be hard-pressed not to have, at the very least, some lovely eye candy.

But here’s the big question I have as I explore: Are the members real people, or are they AI? I am not an expert on deep fakes, but some of the members who are posting look almost too good to be true. 

On the other hand, I know a lot of very beautiful porn stars and sex workers who can reinvent themselves for the camera and don’t use AI or Photoshop to do it.

I decided to look at one woman’s pics in the Blog section of the site. She looked too perfectly posed and touched up. So I Googled her. She is a Russian porn model named Katya Clover. 

That was confusing and made me wonder if the person who posted her photo even had her permission.

I switched to browsing ads from men. I followed one handsome gay gent’s posts about his travels around the United States. He was very nice looking and had nice equipment, too. 

But although he got dozens of impressions with every selfie, I saw only one person reply to his offers of casual sex.

This got me questioning whether the real hookup action on this site is where I can’t see it… in email.

That seems like a strong possibility. So let’s explore.

Messaging Experience

I left my profile empty when I joined, because I wasn’t sure about publishing a professional headshot there. When I came back a few days later, I saw I’d received emails from a couple of men. 

It mystified me that they all responded to a woman who didn’t post a picture or a blog. My profile is bare, and not in the sexy way. Either it spells “fake” or it’s a sign that men on this site are desperate.

I reviewed several profiles. They weren’t engaging enough for a robot to create. No snappy lines. No mention of money or status. No jokes or sunny personalities. Some of them were a little cranky, come to think of it, so definitely real. 

Still, I’m dubious about guys who just say “hello” in their introduction. Is that the best they can do? 

But I will say, for all my suspicions, I did see a lot of profiles I’d deem 100% genuine. 

That one guy with a picture of him on a small boat, and the photo cut off at the waist, who earnestly described his love of performing cunnilingus in long, treacly paragraphs, seemed about as real as it gets.

Erotic Stories

If you love erotica, AFF has just about everything you could want. Expect to find members making up sexy stories or recounting personal experiences to give others a thrill. 

The astonishing number of stories here, and their diversity, are a gold mine for smut lovers of every ilk.

Some claim to be factual. Most are fictional. A lot of them are just the kind of fun reading you’d look for in women’s true confessions magazines and men’s magazines, like Penthouse Variations. 

Only in this case, it’s all amateur writing. Which, for me, makes it somehow more interesting!

Again, while it’s bulky to navigate this tightly woven web of content, if you have the time, the stories are a fun way to get warm and forget the world.

Steamy Videos

If you had any doubts that AFF was porn friendly, you’ll find out soon enough that they host tons of amateur porn. They sent me an email saying, “Watch Steamy Member Videos” and included eight softcore thumbnails of men rubbing themselves (clothes on). 

I checked out the thumbnails, clicked on an image of a fully clothed man rubbing himself obscenely, and was dropped off on the main page of the videos. 

It was a bit of a downer to see the content there was ALL female, with lots of boobs and legs wide open. Hey, I thought they knew what I was looking for? Instead, I had to poke around the page to find the “search button” (top right) and choose filters.

I set my filters to find men over the age of 43. That dropped a page of penises on me, but, surprisingly, it still included a big sprinkle of vaginas (possibly couples who chose the female image to get more clicks).  

The videos space is a great feature for users who love to watch nice-looking, ordinary people showing off and simulating sex. The site may have more male members, but porn involving women is still queen.

Free Versus Paid Membership

I signed up for a free membership for starters. Free members start by creating a full profile and adding pictures of their choice: nude if that’s their pleasure or fully dressed if that’s their style.  

The Pros: I was amazed at how much free content this site shares with users. 

I can view all the profiles, join communities, publish blogs, and upload videos. The site supplements these vids with pro models doing their thing. Great fantasy material! 

The Cons: If you’re on this dating site to date or hook up, the free membership isn’t ideal.

Only the paid members get unlimited contact privileges on AFF. Free members can send private messages to select members only, and they can post in community forums. They can read but not respond to messages from Gold Members.

Bottom Line: Paying for a Gold Membership or VIP membership will mean unlimited chatting, while free members are largely unable to send private chats. This freemium setup is typical for niche dating sites.

My Paid Membership Led to Active Chats

I had an overall positive experience with the Gold membership plan on AFF. It unlocked the private messaging features for me.

AFF has different membership tiers, depending on the perks you want. Most paying customers go for the more flexible month-to-month option, but committing to yearlong access has a much lower monthly cost.

Paying to message is a bit of a gamble on most dating sites (what if no one answers), but AFF had enough chat activity to seem well worth it to me.

Even before I added a photo, emails started flooding in. It almost seemed too good to be true! I replied to three different guys within easy driving distance to see if they would write back. They ALL did.  

Today, my last official day of checking mail on AFF, the count was up to 19 men making overtures in my inbox.  

I have my doubts about guys who reach out with “hi,” but if I were seriously looking to hook up, I would definitely jump on everyone to begin the process of sorting the wheat from the chaff.  

Quick Caveat: Joining as a Woman Likely Helped Me

I’d be remiss not to note the glaring gender gap on Adult Friend Finder (and all dating sites).  

I wrote a jolly little description of myself:  “Lively Woman with a Lively Mind:  I’m looking for a fun, smart companion with an appetite for pleasures, from the truly wholesome to the wildly unconventional. I love conversation, laughing together, and fine dining!”  

I didn’t post a picture, yet my mailbox overfloweth with eager sex partners.  

Imagine if I’d attached an attractive headshot! Some guys are ready to talk to me on the phone or drive to my town for coffee! They are eager. And horny, I guess!

In short, I’m confident I’d be able to meet up with at least one or two “appropriate” (they posted facial and body shots, had solid profiles, were in the right age group, etc.) men in the next week if I wished.  

But what I’ve heard from men about finding women online is a very different story. They have a tougher time getting messages from real women. I’ll get into that in this next section.

Does AFF Actually Work?

I would say your success depends on who you are and what you want! I think the site would work for me because there are real men not too far from me who emailed me and have replied repeatedly.  

Each had a different personality, selfies, and a different background and set of interests. If I were seeking male companionship, knowing these guys are sexually open is definitely a plus. 

Male users tell a story completely different from mine. Some expressed their annoyance on their profiles, warning scammers and robots to stay away. Others have left negative reviews, claiming they are flooded with cam girls soliciting money within hours of joining.

I’ve often heard men say they have to send hundreds of messages to get a handful of real responses. Since men make up about 65% of the membership, the competition is literally stiff.

I’ve had therapy clients who tried using AFF and got quickly discouraged. One of them seemed to see it as a vending machine where you got something in return for every email you sent.  

I’ve heard other men complain about how, despite all the effort they’ve put into their profiles, no one is contacting them. 

Then there’s this guy who left a review outlining his relentless diligence!  

• He sent 400-500 messages with the same copy/paste intro
• He got 10 legitimate responses (1.2% response rate)
• He met 6 of those 10 in person

I’d say meeting six people from a dating site is pretty decent, but it’s staggering how many messages he had to send to get to that point.

There’s no doubt that women are far more likely to get dates and to see a lot of traction on their sexy posts. Couples, throuples, and other poly/CNM (consensual non-monogamy) groupings also seem to do well here. 

But men are going to have to be patient and put in at least two or three times the effort to attract attention. With 90 million members, there ARE people for you… But finding them takes time. 

Success Exists on Adult Friend Finder

In sum, if you want to be successful on this platform, define your goals. Do you want to show off your assets to eager viewers? Are you looking for a one-time hookup? Is your goal to meet swingers and attend events? How about a safe community centered around amateur photography and porn?

Once you define where (or if!) you fit in this world, it all gets easier.
