Businesses have to take chances on new ideas to stay competitive. This daring mindset defined Grindr’s path in Q2, which saw the GBTQ+ app achieve a 27% revenue boost partly due to its exploration of AI tech and its dedication to the specific safety needs of the user.

“Grindr delivered another strong quarter keeping us firmly on track to achieve our 2025 outlook,” said George Arison, Chief Executive Officer of Grindr. In Q2, Grindr went from losing money this time last year ($22.4 million) to gaining money ($16.6 million). Revenue grew to $104 million from $82 million in 2024.

Grindr may have its rapid product development to thank for its steady growth, particularly its explorations proprietary AI.

Grindr AI (or gAI — “gay I”) is the app’s ambitious new AI system. With gAI, Grindr is doing something other dating apps haven’t: fully and decisively embracing a future in which the company’s core business is defined by AI.

It’s clear Grindr is betting on AI innovations to shape its future success: “Our goal is to make Grindr a pioneering AI company,” according to the app.

While some dating apps struggle to survive the modern age — we’re looking at you, Bumble — others have tapped into AI efficiency and overall safety as two particularly important avenues for user engagement.

Grindr’s proprietary AI advancements and new safety features send a clear message to shareholders and users alike: We’re not only ready for the future, but prepared for whatever is coming next.

Grindr: The Unexpected AI Leader

Grindr sees itself as a decisive trailblazer in the dating app/AI space, one that isn’t afraid to try new things and push boundaries: “We’re leading the way in creating an experience we expect other consumer products to follow as AI adoption grows,” Arison said in the company’s Q2 Shareholder Letter.

One of the company’s most promising AI enhancements is A-List, which has received “overwhelmingly positive feedback”, said Arison. A-List gives the user a high-quality list of potential matches based on their likes, dislikes, and dating needs.

Grindr saw its initial success with A-List as a sign to implement AI into even more parts of the app experience. Grindr AI is part of Grindr’s overarching goal to become less about hookups and more about general connection in the “global gayborhood.”

gAI is what the company calls a “full-stack foundation” made up of three layers: A model layer, an architecture layer, and an application layer. As the “brains” of the operation, the model layer includes the use of proprietary and third-party AI models alike.

The architecture layer deals with the data that makes the average Grindr user (gay men, mostly) tick, including user behavior and images. The complexity of modern GBTQ+ culture is absorbed by the model layer, creating more personalized and nuanced insights that meet the user’s needs.

The data generated by the architecture layer is used to create highly-relevant features for the user in the application layer. The more personalized, relevant, and intuitive these features are, the better the outcome — and more lucrative — the outcome, not only for the user, but for Grindr.

Some may see totally embracing AI as a risky choice, given how quickly AI has been evolving and, therefore, how unpredictable it can be. But that’s not how Grindr sees it.

By embracing AI, Grindr hopes it projects the image of a healthy, cutting-edge company that doesn’t hesitate to jump on boundary-pushing innovations, especially those with the potential to deepen engagement and make the company more valuable.

Pushing Products That Speak to Grindr User Needs

Speaking of the application layer: Grindr points to its swift product development as a driving force behind its financial growth in Q2.

“This quarter, we launched beta versions of mobile mapping in both Right Now and Explore – two critical user experiences,” Arison said. For years, Grindr users have been asking for mobile mapping that makes hookups and dating alike safer; the app is finally delivering.

Grindr’s original goal was to facilitate quick hookups, and it aims to make these hookups safer and more efficient with mobile mapping. The Right Now feature has generated “solid conversion” which has made it possible for the app to monetize the feature “faster than planned.”

Explore Heatmaps are another new innovation available in 21 markets. Grindr says that Explore is “one of our most valuable features” for subscribers and frequent travelers, as it gives users the chance to discover new profiles outside their area.

Maps features aren’t only a way to facilitate hookups. In its letter to shareholders, Grindr pointed out how maps can make both hookups and deeper relationships possible, while supporting Gen Z’s newfound desire for IRL dating events:

“Longer term, we see maps as a high-leverage tech capability for innovation in other areas of the app — unlocking discovery of events, activities, and businesses.”

Safety and Speed are Key to Growth, Grindr Says

When talking about AI, one must also talk about the user’s right to privacy. Grindr says that the three-layer full-stack AI foundation establishes “a robust privacy framework” and plays a pivotal role in meeting the user’s need for trust and safety.

“We’ve developed an AI-driven approach to identify and eliminate malicious, fake, and other bad-actor accounts,” Grindr announced in the shareholder letter. “In Q2, we used these capabilities to remove a meaningful number of such unwanted accounts, primarily in one international region, above our usual rate of banning unwanted accounts.”

There’s safety online, and then there’s safety within the LGBTQ+ community itself, and both are vital. In Q2, Grindr continued to combine safety with fun features and experiences that speak directly to users’ desire for IRL connections.

It named its 2nd annual Grindr Rides Again bus tour as an important part of this strategy. It also announced Grindr Presents, which it described as “our new in-app content hub that allows users to view our popular video series and social channels without leaving Grindr.”

The dating industry may be in flux, but Grindr has carved out an enviable space in the AI world. The app hinges its future success on its ability to stay within this niche. “That combination – speed, clarity, and discipline – is how we’ll maintain our durable competitive advantage and long-term shareholder value,” Arison explained.
