As daters look forward to more in-person connections in 2026, they’re also looking for app features that make the transition into real-world conversations less intimidating.

To meet this growing need, Hinge has introduced Convo Starters, a feature that offers personalized guidance to help users improve their conversational skills.

According to Hinge, 72% of daters are more likely to consider a match when they receive an actual message alongside a “like.” And ‘likes’ sent with a thoughtful comment about the other person’s photos or profile are twice as likely to lead to a real-life date.

Showing interest in the form of a message really does go a long way — if only more daters took the time. As Hinge and other dating apps have discovered, modern daters are often intimidated by a blank message box.

“We’ve heard from daters that not knowing what to say can hold them back from sending a comment at all,” Hinge’s President and CMO, Jackie Jantos, said in a press release for Convo Starters.

Convo Starters is Hinge’s attempt to “ease that pressure.” It is not intended to be a crutch so much as a training tool. It doesn’t tell users exactly what to say; it provides real value by teaching users conversational skills they can use in future dating experiences.

“By offering gentle guidance grounded in someone’s profile, we’re helping daters start thoughtful, genuine conversations that show real interest — and bring them one step closer to a great first date,” Jantos said.

Hinge Aims to Strengthen Soft Skills and Confidence

What Jantos doesn’t mention, but is undoubtedly true, is how AI-enhanced features that provide a real service, like Convo Starters, naturally make the app a more accessible and reliable source for nervous daters.

With this in mind, Convo Starters is part of an emerging trend in the dating app industry: features directly aimed at improving the user’s confidence as they transition from online to real-world connections.

In fact, more than 80% of those surveyed for Tinder’s State of Human Connection report said they’ve tried — and appreciated — AI-enabled conversation-assistance tools on dating apps. And 83.6% of respondents spoke positively about AI games that help users hone soft skills and build confidence.

Perhaps Tinder and Hinge have cracked the code: If the apps want to remain relevant with modern daters, they need to market themselves less as a substitute for in-person dating and more as a vital confidence-building tool that, in turn, leads to better luck in the romance department.

Convo Starters is not about providing tech for tech’s sake. It’s meant to be a real, actionable, valuable innovation that makes the dating app experience feel like a necessary part of the modern dating process.

“Each tip encourages daters to ask questions, exchange ideas and opinions, or engage in deeper discussions with each other,” according to Hinge. Unlike other AI innovations, which aim to provide convenience, Convo Starters is focused on depth, and how deeper conversations can foster a more satisfying dating experience overall.

This is why Hinge emphasizes the importance of users writing in their own voice, and not a robotic AI voice.

Hinge Evolves with Expert Insight Built In

Hinge also emphasizes how Convo Starters’ suggestions are shaped by behavioral scientists and PhD researchers, and not by random algorithms or non-experts. Users are given genuine guidance by real experts, setting a high standard for AI-generated tips and suggestions on dating apps.

Hinge’s lead relationship scientist, Logan Ury, explained how encouraging the user to make a “small effort” can reap major benefits in the long run. It “helps you stand out, and sets you up for a great conversation,” she said.

Hinge already makes starting a conversation less intimidating by having each user respond to thought-provoking prompts and upload interesting profile pics. The conversational opportunities are endless — if the users have the confidence and know-how to keep a lively dialogue afloat, both online and offline.

It’s not the first time Hinge has innovated to provide real value and guidance to users. ‘Your World’ Prompts and Prompt Feedback are two AI-enhanced features that help users gain confidence in their dating skills and make progress with matches.

The feature may be optional, but early testing has revealed positive reactions to the new feature, with over one-third (35%) of daters reporting that Convo Starters has helped them feel more confident in their flirting and conversational skills.

Hinge’s ultimate goal isn’t just to make high-quality matches, but to be a reliable and expert-led source of guidance and learning for users.

“As dating culture evolves, Hinge continues to evolve with it,” according to the press release announcing Convo Starters. The app hopes its evolution will “[create] new ways for people to share their curiosity and depth with others as they build lasting connections.”
