Key Takeaways
- French dating app happn was acquired by Chinese tech company Hello Group on Sept. 2, putting both companies on the path to global expansion.
- North America has dominated the dating app scene for years, but the Asia-Pacific region is quickly catching up, signaling new growth opportunities for dating apps.
- By acquiring happn, Hello Group is setting the stage for continued growth into European and North American markets.
Dating apps have saturated the dating landscapes in the U.S. and Europe. If Hello Group’s recent acquisition of the dating app happn is any indication, the industry is seeking greener — and more fertile — pastures in Asia.
International expansion allows happn to bring two seemingly conflicting goals to life: to provide “local and authentic dating” to global markets. CEO of happn, Karima Ben Abdelmalek, said that “Joining HelloGroup today marks an important new milestone, one that I am extremely proud of, both as a CEO, but also for the company and its teams.”
The acquisition allows happn to level up by “boosting our international development, capitalizing on a team of talents with complementary expertise, building a local presence near singles, and continuing to offer a product that is the only one of its kind on the dating market,” she said.
The rise of dating app fatigue has forced professionals to think of creative ways to drive growth and engagement. This acquisition gives France-based happn the opportunity to expand beyond Europe and into untapped global markets, from China and Japan to Turkey and Latin America.
But the acquisition doesn’t only open doors for happn. It also gives Asia-based Hello Group the opportunity to make an impact in Western markets. With dating apps losing steam in the Western world, the dating industry is looking to Asia for more room to grow.
For Hungry Dating App Users, Look To Asia – Not the US
Dating apps are not only a dime a dozen in the U.S., but people are typically willing to pay for them, making North America the most dominant region in the online dating market. But according to Straits Research, the Asia-Pacific region is catching up.
Unlike older generations, younger daters in Asia are warming up to the idea of dating apps. It helps that more people have access to the internet than they used to. Straits Research cites “changing public attitudes” as a major reason why Asia-Pacific is the fastest growing region for dating app adoption.
“Younger demographics are embracing dating apps, particularly those offering local language support and culturally adapted features,” Straits Research noted. This just happens to be happn’s greatest strength; it’s known for connecting users based on their geographical proximity and shared regional interests.
And Hello Group’s reputation as a leader in China’s tech industry undoubtedly gives it credibility as a trusted source of connection. After all, it owns Momo and Tantan, two of the most popular dating apps in China, making it a dominating force in Asia’s dating industry.
The Acquisition Opens Global Doors For Both Companies
Like Ben Abdelmalek, Hello Group COO Sichuan Zhang said she believes Western/Eastern collaboration will help both companies create a stronger presence in their respective markets.
“The synergy with happn was obvious: the similarity of our missions and our international ambitions is what enabled the new chapter we are starting today,” said Sichuan Zhang in a press release.
Matchmaking apps with a location and interest-based model is a familiar concept in Western dating cultures, but not necessarily in others, making China-based Hello Group and France-based happn a collaboration that will ideally open doors for both companies.
The acquisition brings happn closer to achieving international growth, a vital aspect of Ben Abdelmalek’s three-part “Smart Dating” plan.
With Ben Abdelmalek at the helm, happn has also focused on rebranding for the modern dater and providing strong connections at a local level. Thanks in part to these efforts, happn has tripled its profits since 2022.
For Hello Group, acquiring happn brings them one step closer to making an impact on a global scale. “For the new endeavors, our goal is to continue deepening our presence in overseas markets, enriching our brand portfolio, and building a long-term growth engine,” said Sichuan Zhang in Hello Group’s recent Q2 earnings call.
“With over 400 million singles, demand is high [in China] despite government scrutiny on dating apps,” according to Straits Research. With 170 million users to its name, happn has room to grow in China, and Hello Group has a newfound connection to Europe and beyond.
